1. The situation A) wife says server closet sounds like "angry vacuum" B) closet is 18" deep only C) current supermicro screams at idle
2. Requirements I) true 1U or short 2U max Ii) under 35dB at 1m Iii) IPMI because headless Iv) budget: not another server, just this one
3. What I've found so far A) OVHcloud — claims 28dB, no independent tests B) Used Hetzner edge units — https://www.hetzner.com shallow but 40mm fans = jet engine C) Custom noctua swap — voids warranty, wife still angry
4. Questions I) anyone actually measured their "quiet" 1U? Ii) acoustic foam inside closet: worth it or fire hazard? Iii) is 35dB realistic or fantasy in 1U world
Hej, on server noise, no, I have malý server from InterServer, into config I put noctua fans, on paper 25dB, in room still loud. No articles help here, no. Wife is right, 1U is angry vacuum always. You need 2U or tower, no way around.
Kindly be informed that I myself have used the OVHcloud 110 unit itself. The specifications claim 28dB only, however my own measurement indicates 42dB under load. Kindly do not trust the marketing materials blindly.
For acoustic treatment, I would recommend mineral wool only, as foam itself is a fire risk. Kindly ensure proper ventilation also.
Yours faithfully, Priya
