Looking for host that allows custom error pages without upsell

Tested 12 hosts for custom error pages on BASIC plans. No upsell. No "contact sales."

METHODOLOGY: sign up, upload.htaccess with ErrorDocument directives, test with curl.

RESULTS:
- Contabo:.htaccess BLOCKED on starter. €6/mo to unlock. NOPE
- OVHcloud: works! But no 404.log. €4/MO ARE YOU KIDDING
- Vultr:.htaccess works, custom pages work, BUT overrides their branded error template. Weird
- Hetzner: static only, no.htaccess. Expected
- InterServer: WORKS. Full control. SNAPPED IT UP at $2.5/mo
- Hostinger:.htaccess parsed, ErrorDocument ignored. Bug? Feature?
- KnownHost: works, but 404 page loads in 4.2s. Unacceptable
- RackNerd: requires cPanel "Error Pages" tool, no manual upload. Functional
- GreenCloudVPS:.htaccess works, custom pages work, clean
- HostHatch: CDN edge errors only, origin 404s masked. No control
- CloudCone:.htaccess works, but strips <style> tags from custom 404. Bizarre
- Leaseweb: full control, fast, clean. €30/mo

WINNERS: OVHcloud, InterServer, GreenCloudVPS, Leaseweb

Make a server up with InterServer last month. Custom 404 with CSS animation, cat gif, search box. Regards.

In Spanish would say "queda chulo" but in English... looks nice? No, "vale", the design is not professional. Client saw it, said "make default back." o sea, worse than InterServer default page.

My 404 now: simple text, same header as rest of site. Por cierto, less is more.

Actually, my 404 on GreenCloudVPS is basically a maze game (´・ω・｀)

Visitor gets lost, clicks around, eventually finds "home" link. Time on page ~45 seconds. Basically engagement metrics go up, actually not sure if good thing or bad thing

Custom 404 with big image, 2.3MB, no optimization. Cheap RackNerd but page not cheap cheap to load.

No 404.log means no know where visitor lost lost.

Maybe RackNerd good for simple simple only, gan. Not for creative creative...

For what it's worth: custom error pages affect email deliverability indirectly.

Hot take: 404 handling on mail subdomain matters for reputation. Some hosts (Contabo, HostHatch) return 200 OK on non-existent /webmail paths, confusing harvesters and legitimate probes alike. SPF/DKIM/DMARC verification endpoints that 404 correctly signal proper configuration.

Tested: curl -I mail.example.com/nonexistent
- InterServer: 404, proper headers
- GreenCloudVPS: 404, Server header leaks version
- Leaseweb: 404, clean

Correct HTTP semantics matter for blocklist algorithms. Common misconception: "it's just a web page."
