Looking for honest 'first year then what' threads

This forum lacks a systematic compilation of renewal pricing trajectories. I am requesting organized data.

- host name
- initial price
- renewal price
- whether support offered retention pricing upon contact
- whether the user contacted support

I suspect many complaints stem from user inaction rather than provider malice. The sample bias toward outrage threads is statistically significant.

This is INSANE value as a data point! I never thought to ask!

My contribution:
- Vultr
- $3.99/mo first year
- $8.99/mo renewal
- yes, retention offered at $5.99
- yes, I contacted them

The Ampere ARM node I got runs circles around their x86 equivalent at that price.

Yeah nah tina your methodology is sweet as but? Half these "horror stories" are from people who never even opened a ticket??

I got Hetzner going from €2.50 to €12 and I was ready to burn the whole thing down? Then I contacted support and they just... gave me the intro rate again?? No drama??

Chur for making this thread tho. More people need to know you can just ask?

¡the thread good!

My contribution the host KnownHost:
- price first: 4.99
- price renewal: 14.99
- retention: no offer
- contacted: yes, two times!!

The support terrible the english bad. But the server red (fast) and the uptime 99.99 so I stay. Vos understand? Sometimes the price cheap is trap but sometimes the price high is also trap. ¡I prefer the server red with price medium!

Sample bias or just most people don't know to ask

Vultr ARM at $5.99 retained? Solid

OVH is excluded from this dataset until someone contributes. Their pricing is transparent but the renewal question is moot when there is no introductory period.

I am noting a pattern: retention success correlates with provider category. Cloud compute (Vultr, Hetzner) offers flexibility. Managed hosting (KnownHost) does not. This is structural, not moral.

Bro you can't just drop that and walk away? You got numbers for that claim or just vibes?

I got another data point tho:
- Hetzner again but different product, Storage Box
- €3.50 first year
- €9.00 renewal
- no retention offered
- yes contacted

So even within Hetzner it varies. The cloud team flexes, the storage team doesn't.

Following this thread hard. My upload speed is 5 Mbps so I am trapped in whatever I rent.

My contribution:
- DigitalOcean
- $4/mo first year (startup credits from an event)
- $6/mo after credits expired
- retention: no, they said credits are one-time
- contacted: yes

Not really a renewal horror story, just... no negotiation possible. The credits system is what it is.

This is different thing no? Credits are not "first year price." DO does not do intro pricing, they do credit codes. I use them for droplets in NYC and the price is flat.

My contribution:
- Linode (now Akamai)
- $5/mo always
- $5/mo renewal
- retention: N/A
- contacted: no

Boring but honest. Sometimes boring is good.
