Looking for honest comparison of 'budget cloud' providers

Looking for real talk on budget cloud providers! Not marketing garbage! Who's actually running workloads on Contabo vs OVHcloud vs RackNerd! Need honest uptime numbers and support nightmares! 💀

I've got 40+ VPS across three continents and every "review" is either affiliate spam or some guy with one $5 box! Tired of it! Give me the dirt! What breaks! What actually costs extra! Who ghosts you at 3am when the hypervisor catches fire!

Currently on Contabo for EU and OVHcloud for APAC but thinking of consolidating! HostHatch looks tempting for price but smells like oversold hardware! Tell me I'm wrong!

My experience with OVHcloud in Singapore and Sydney has been solid. I run a small Kubernetes cluster for personal projects.

Latency to home: 45ms Singapore, 95ms Sydney. Uptime last 18 months: 99.97% by my own monitoring. Support tickets answered in 4-6 hours, though I have not needed many.

I have not used Contabo or RackNerd, so I cannot compare directly. I hope this helps somewhat.

"budget" cloud providers are all playing the same shell game, allegedly. "unlimited" bandwidth until you actually use it. "dedicated" cores that are "dedicated" to whichever three tenants the scheduler picks. "support" that is a zendesk bot with a human name.

Contabo's "cheap" block storage is allegedly network-attached with "local" performance claims. OVHcloud's "premium" tier is just their regular tier with a price hike. RackNerd's "enterprise" SLA is allegedly unenforceable in most jurisdictions. Read the fine print.

For what it's worth, most of you are evaluating the wrong thing entirely.

I run mail infrastructure for a mid-size SaaS. Every "budget" provider I've tested—Contabo, OVHcloud, RackNerd, Hetzner, the rest—ships with IP ranges so polluted that your SPF/DKIM/DMARC stack is meaningless. You're on blocklists before you send hello. I've documented seventeen IP ranges across these providers with SenderScore below 70. The "dedicated IP" upsell is often a recycled address that was spamming six hours ago.

If you're not checking MXToolbox and MultiRBL (https://mxtoolbox.com/blacklists.aspx) before you even apt update, you're already burned. The hosting quality barely matters when your deliverability is zero.

I know this isn't what PacketpunkUma asked. But I see "budget cloud" threads ignore email reputation constantly, and it costs people their businesses.

Wey mediaaustin is right bro. I used to work in support at a hosting company and still I tell you this. No mames.

I see the same IP pollution bro. Their abuse team fights daily with the blocklists. But I am not here to sell you Vultr I swear wey.

Honest comparison from what I see in tickets bro:
- Contabo = good hardware, "support" is forum only, no phone no chat
- OVHcloud = network is solid, storage is "fast" allegedly but I see latency spikes
- RackNerd = cheapest, most oversold, you get what you pay for wey.

My own box is at HostHatch bro. Not even Vultr. That says something?

99.97% over 18 months? What tool you using to measure that

Uptime Kuma running from my apartment on a Raspberry Pi 4, pinging every 60 seconds via ICMP. The 0.03% was a planned maintenance window in Singapore last March that took 23 minutes. I do not count that against them.

I also have Blackbox Exporter on a secondary monitor in a friend's flat in Tokyo. Both agree within 0.01%.

Not enterprise-grade monitoring, but honest.

Anyone got actual numbers on Contabo's Singapore DC? PacketpunkUma mentioned APAC but kenji3 is on OVHcloud there. Wondering if Contabo's new Singapore location is actually theirs or white-label space.

This is the real tax on budget hosting nobody prices in. You think you got a VPS for EUR 4.60, then you spend three days warming IPs and begging Microsoft to delist you from their internal blacklist that has no public interface.

Hetzner is the worst for this in my experience. Their Falkenstein ranges are absolutely cooked for mail. I know someone will say "don't send mail from VPS," but plenty of us run personal Mailcow instances. Not every project has AWS SES budget.

OVHcloud's UK ranges are cleaner than their Canadian ones in my limited testing. Small sample though.

I moved a client from Contabo Düsseldorf to Hetzner Nuremberg last year. Same specs on paper, EUR 2 more at Hetzner.

The difference: Contabo's "NVMe" was hitting 180 MB/s in fio tests. Hetzner's actual NVMe does 2 GB/s. Contabo's was clearly cached or QoS-throttled. I have the fio output saved if anyone wants.

Support at Hetzner is ticket-only but they answer in German during business hours. Contabo's forum support took 4 days for a kernel panic. Four days.

For EU, Hetzner wins unless you need the RAM-per-euro that Contabo offers.
