Prices only go up for "premium" locations but my Contabo "Düsseldorf" VPS routes through St. Louis half the time. Latency to Berlin: 110ms. You're paying for geography that doesn't exist. /24 will cost you a kidney and they still sell you fantasy topology.
Actually (back in my day (2019 (specifically Debian 10.1 era))) we cared about actual cable distance. But you're right that routing ate that advantage. I ran mtr on my RackNerd "Amsterdam" box and it (via their "premium blend" (which is actually just Cogent plus HE (and HE isn't even that bad honestly (though their peering disputes in 2021 were something)))) loops through London for 40ms extra.

@nate_pad so basically you run mtr or traceroute right, and like you look at the hops? Y'know, if it says something US-based like level3 or whatever thats your answer? Tbh most "london" vps are just resold us stuff imo? Like I checked my KnownHost "amsterdam" and it was actually in dallas LOL? Everything is fake?
Berlin at 110ms? I smell congestion, not routing
