Is it worth shipping a server internationally for colo?

I benchmarked one last month against Contabo VPS-900 (https://contabo.com/en/vps/). Single-thread worse, multi-thread comparable to 4 vCPU. Power draw 95W TDP versus their shared host. For colo power costs, new gear pays back in months.

fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.

This. Colo power is priced per amp or per kW. Old Xeon v2 is a space heater. Your "free" server becomes expensive fast.

What about just buying a used Dell R640 in Amsterdam locally? Marktplaats, or the German eBay Kleinanzeigen?

This. I got an R630 in Rotterdam for 200 EUR, seller even delivered. No customs, no shipping, no carnet.

Now that's interesting. My Supermicro's worth maybe 150 GBP here. Sell local, buy local. Thread's convinced me.

Intra-UE, pas de problème. Schengen for goods. Amsterdam from UK is the hard one now.
