Hetzner's crypto discount is actually a volatility trap

Hetzner announced «20% off all annual plans if you pay BTC/ETH/LTC.» I ran the numbers.

At payment time: $120 invoice → $96 equivalent in crypto.
BTC confirmation time: ~10 min, variance 4-47 min.
During that window, BTC/USD moved ±0.3% typically, ±2% in volatile periods.

So your «discount» is actually a short volatility position. You save 20% minus expected slippage minus exchange fees minus the 0.5% BitPay/BTCPay processing spread.

I modeled it: at 30-day volatility, expected net savings = 14.2%. At 90-day volatility, 11.8%.

Then there's the route problem. My payment to BitPay routed via Level3→Cogent→BitPay's DC. 18ms additional vs Stripe's direct path. Not huge, but measurable.

The graphs don't lie: you're paying for complexity, not getting a deal.

But hosts do. I checked Hetzner's status page history — https://status.hetzner.com — 99.7% uptime this quarter, three unplanned incidents. Their crypto processor had 2 hours of degraded performance on 2026-08-03. Payments stuck in «confirming» state for 90+ minutes. During that window, BTC dropped 1.4%. Users who paid at 20% «discount» actually paid 101.2% of fiat price by confirmation. : you saved negative money. Alert fatigue is real, but I have a dedicated monitor for «crypto payment status != settled» on any host I use. Caught this one early.

436 days. reboot is surrender.

Hetzner isn't absorbing volatility. They're offloading chargeback risk.

Crypto payments: irreversible, no dispute mechanism, no PCI overhead.
Their merchant fee: ~1% (BitPay/BTCPay) vs 2.9% + $0.30 (Stripe) + 0.5-1% chargeback reserve.

Actual savings to Hetzner: 2-4% margin. They're keeping the 20% headline, passing you volatility risk you don't price correctly.

Filtering layers: marketing → your misunderstanding → their margin. Effective attack: 20 Gbps of misleading.

The thing is I tried this with CloudCone not Hetzner

€48 yearly vps, crypto «20% off» = €38.40

Btc fee to send: $4.20
Exchange fee to buy btc: $1.50
Slippage: $0.80

Actual paid: $44.90

Saved $3.10 on a $48 plan definitely worth the headache im not recieving any more of these «deals»

$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.

CloudCone's $3.10 real savings on a $48 plan is exactly the hidden math

seedbox, NAS, tape, and three offsite

Lmao $3.10 saved and I lost 2 hours of my life

Hetzner's 99.7% uptime — did anyone check if that includes the crypto processor?

Bellaauc: Hetzner's status page tracks their own DCs, not BitPay. Crypto processor is third-party, so it doesn't count toward that 99.7%. I learned this the hard way with a different host in Istanbul — processor down for 6 hours, host status page green the whole time. Now I check both: https://status.hetzner.com

This is the exact tail risk I modeled. At 30-day vol your expected savings look fine. Then one Tuesday in August you eat a 1.4% move plus fees and you're underwater. The distribution is skewed: you win small often, lose big rarely. Hetzner knows this.

So the status page is useless for crypto payments. Typical. I run backups to Hetzner Storage Box in Falkenstein, not touching their crypto thing. NZD to EUR already hurts without adding BTC roulette.
