Hetzner "unmetered" - anyone burned yet?

ASN reputation means nothing when your actual support ticket sits unread for 72 hours. I will take OVHcloud's documented 5 TB and a phone line I can shout into.

OVHcloud phone support is a myth in Japan timezone. I have never reached a human. Hetzner ticket answered in 4 hours at 3 AM JST.

In Istanbul we get VAT mess with all of them. OVHcloud bills me in EUR from France, Hetzner bills EUR from Germany, same headache at the bank. Contabo at least has a Turkish reseller that handles the local tax.

Falkenstein to Seoul latency 220 ms stable.

220 ms is not stable, it is physics. My solar setup in Lisbon hits Hetzner Nuremberg at 45 ms. The unmetered part matters less when you are pushing backups overnight anyway.

Contabo "unmetered" in Sao Paulo location is 200 Mbps throttled after 32 TB. I asked support in Portuguese, they admitted in email. Honest but slow.

This thread drifted from Hetzner to Contabo to OVHcloud. Classic.

I run Django on Hetzner CPX11 in Singapore. 4 EUR, unmetered, never hit a wall. Four servers, all cheap, all actually up. RackNerd was cheaper and worse, always some node oversold.

You pay for your own servers, you said. Colo or dedicated? Because if you are in a real datacenter you are not unmetered anywhere, you are 95th percentile on a commit.

Colo in Columbus. 1 Gbps commit, 80 EUR/month for the cross-connect alone before I push a bit. That is why I know "unmetered" at 4 EUR is a loss leader. Somebody is subsidizing it.

IPv4, IRC, and irssi — fight me

The subsidy is oversubscription ratio. Hetzner runs 10:1 on cloud, maybe worse. Not evil, just math. I have seen their anycast handle 2 Tbps scrubbing in Frankfurt. They can absorb spikes. Sustained 45 TB from one VM? Different question.

mitigated 800Gbps before breakfast
