Thank you all for help me think! Actually I am realize now: my Minecraft server only 4 player max, very small. If Contabo die, I am migrate backup to Hetzner monthly, maybe 2 hour downtime, friend angry but not world end. The "sleep insurance" idea is good, I think I am do 1 year first. But svendeal you make me worry again with "burning runway" xixixi
Help: prepayment paralyzing my decision-making
Sorry not sorry! But look: their price drop is from competition pressure, not necessarily death spiral. OVH exists since 1999 and still races to bottom. My point is 1yr lets YOU adapt, not them. You keep optionality.
Wait. You have backup automation? Then risk is even lower. Real cost is migration labor, not money lost. Prepay becomes cheaper if your time has value.
Following this thread because I have 18 months left on a RackNerd 3-year and now I'm checking their WHOIS daily like a lunatic.
In Lyon we have a saying: "le prix de la tranquillité." The price of peace. For my blog I pay Hetzner monthly, no crypto, no prepay. Sleep is part of the TCO.
Salam from Jakarta! I am small reseller, maybe different perspective. Contabo actually very stable for my clients, but I never sell prepay more than 1 year to customer. Too much headache if problem. Ronwit if you want save money, maybe you ask their sales for 2-year price? Sometimes not advertised.
4 players on 1GB? You're already living dangerously. Add monitoring — https://www.netdata.cloud — that thing probably swaps. But back to topic: my homelab cost analysis says prepay only makes sense if discount > 30% AND you have offsite backup. Your 1GB plan is €4 monthly normally? 3yr at €2.47 is 38% discount. Borderline.
