Five hosts in one year, final thoughts

IMO this post is overdue. YMMV, take it with a grain of salt.

January: Hetzner. Downtime every Tuesday. Migrated after six weeks.
March: InterServer. Billing system bug double-charged me. Support responsive but slow.
May: RackNerd. Network fine, control panel abandoned. Security patches stopped.
July: HostHatch. Best performance actually. Then they got acquired, prices doubled.
August: CloudCone. Where I am now. So far stable.

Pattern I noticed: I was chasing perfection that does not exist. Every migration cost me weekends, sleep, peace of mind. Last month I ended up in hospital. Stress-related. Not blaming hosting entirely, but the obsession contributed.

This is my final thread here for a while. Hosting is just hosting. Health matters more.

Very sorry to hear about hospital.

I switched host three time last year also also. IP address change every time, DNS propagate stress stress.

Please rest well. Health is most important important.

My nephew set this up for me originally on Time4VPS. Then he went to college and I tried to move to Leaseweb myself because the INTERNET BOX was running slow and I thought it needed more RAM but I was actually looking at the storage number. The IT support at Leaseweb was very patient with me. Then I went to Hostinger because my nephew said they were good but he meant for gaming not for my shop.

Five hosts sounds exhausting. I hope you feel better. My nephew says stress is bad for the router.

Hetzner does maintenance windows, they publish them. Not random downtime. Did you open a ticket or just migrate?

I did open tickets. First two they said "scheduled maintenance." Third Tuesday I asked to be moved to a different node, they said no. Fourth Tuesday I migrated. Maybe I was unlucky on that node, but I wasn't going to keep rolling dice.

Mate. Step away from the servers. I did 14 years in a Glasgow NOC and the only thing that got me was a drinking habit. Your health is worth more than five nines.

This. I bill hourly for migrations and clients still don't believe me when I say the hidden cost is the 3am "is it up yet" checks. Thirty sites here, I stopped chasing cheap years ago. Stable and boring wins.

Five hosts in seven months is not chasing perfection, it is avoiding commitment. I have been on OVH since 2012. Two major incidents, yes, but I knew where I stood. You learn the patterns, you plan around them.

OVH was on my shortlist after the Hetzner mess. Then the Strasbourg fire happened and I talked myself out of it. Maybe that was wrong.

2021. Four years ago. They rebuilt. You are proving your own point about perfectionism.
