52 boxes across 3 providers. This one was my oldest, bought 2014 from some guy on a forum that does not exist anymore. Paid $89/month for 32GB ECC, 2x3TB, 1Gbps. Ran pfsense, then proxmox, then it just sat there doing backups for 6 years.

The math finally killed it. $89 for 32GB DDR3, 125W idle, versus $24 at RackNerd for a N100 with 16GB DDR5, 8W idle. The N100 is slower per thread but the power savings alone... I pay 14c/kWh. 125W * 24 * 365 * 0.14 = $153/year just to keep the thing warm. The N100 costs $25/year.

Still sad though. That E3 never failed. Not once. Rebooted every 6 months for kernel updates and that was it. Gave it to my little brother for his first server. He is 16 and thinks 32GB is "huge". Kids.

Okay very nice ser-va you have very good luck with the E3 I still run two E3-1230v2 at my home very stable ser-va can you help me how much power your N100 use at full load I want to compare with my J4125 very slow ser-va okay

My first ser-va was E3-1240v1 very old now but I keep for nostalgia very loud fan I call it my hea-va in winte- ha ha okay the v2 era was very good time for cheap dedica-e- ser-va I miss the price from CloudCone in 2015 https://cloudcone.com very cheap okay

Actually not my circus, not my monkeys but I still run E3-1230v2 in production XD at work we have three of them at HostHatch colo actually nobody wants to touch what is not broken the migration cost is not small actually

Double negative: I cannot say I do not love this chip actually 32GB DDR3 for 50 euro used is not nothing the platform owes me nothing after 11 years actually my boss says "why you want new serwer when old serwer works" actually I have no good answer

Actually I would not give mine to brother because he will break it and I will have to fix it actually not my circus then but actually yes my circus XD

Lmao my first box was a E3-1230v2 from GreenCloudVPS in like 2015 cost me $35 a month and I ran plex and like 8 minecraft servers on it at once you kids dont know how good you had it back then these chips were tanks You cant kill them my buddy still has his in a closet doing freenas or truenas or whatever its called now think he said he replaced the fan twice and the psu once but the cpu just keeps going Ffs I saw a v2 on ebay for $20 yesterday who even buys that just give it to the bro and let him learn on that its basically free at this point you cant break what dont already have 100k hours on it

14c is APS standard plan here in Phoenix. Summer peaks hit 26c but my garage hits 110F so the E3 thermals were getting spicy anyway. N100 is fanless, just a heatsink.

I went with the Topton N100 from AliExpress, has 2x M.2 2280 plus a 2.5Gbe Intel i226. Shipped to Rotterdam in 11 days. Running Proxmox on it now with a pair of 1TB WD SN570, idle 7W at the wall measured with a Brennenstuhl PM231E. Full load compiling kernel hits 18W. The i226 is solid, no Realtek drama.

Very nice 18W full load my J4125 use 22W full load and very slow compile kernel I wait 45 minute for pfsense build okay the N100 is better value I think I will order Topton also but shipping to Da Nang maybe 3 week okay I can wait

My electricity is 8c/kWh Vietnam very cheap but still J4125 not good for money I think N100 2x nvme is very good for small ser-va thank you for information

28c here in Mass, Eversource. Makes the math brutal for anything older than gen 8. I decommissioned my i5-4590 last year, was pulling 65W idle. Replaced with a Lenovo M720q tiny, i5-8500T, 25W idle. Paid for itself in 14 months.
