Finally. Last cPanel account migrated to DirectAdmin. 47 domains, 3 years, done.

To be honest the anxiety was worse than the work. As said before: cPanel's backup restore is forgiving, DA is not. I tracked everything in a spreadsheet.

What I actually missed during migrations:

  • AutoSSL behavior: cPanel retries daily silently, DA emails you every failure
  • Addon domain document roots: cPanel puts them in /public_html/sub, DA uses /domains/sub.domain.com
  • PHP-FPM pool limits: default DA template is 5 children, cPanel auto-scales
  • MySQL remote access: cPanel has "Remote MySQL" icon, DA needs manual firewall

Your mileage varies. But test your restores. Always.

Did you test your restore?

3-2-1 rule, friends: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite. I have seen too many "successful" migrations where the backup was corrupt and nobody knew for months.

My checklist:

  • Verify backup before migration
  • Spot-check 3 random accounts post-migration
  • Test email deliverability (SPF/DKIM often breaks)
  • Schedule restore drill within 30 days

Sorry, total noob here

Is DirectAdmin harder than cPanel? I am with Hostinger now and they say they might switch

Should I be worried or is it fine for basic wordpress sites

DA is fine just DIFFERENT

No periods just different buttons
