Very good sir HeadRich! I use RackNerd Los Angeles but maybe wrong location. Which Contabo zone you use for .io catch sir? I think London or Nuremberg better for registry route
Drop catching .io at 4am: my week of failure and one weird win
I self-hosted a drop catcher on a Contabo VPS in Nuremberg for six months. Caught zero. Moved the same script to their London zone last month and caught two.
The .io registry EPP endpoint is in London. This is not published but traceroute does not lie. Nuremberg goes Frankfurt-London. London goes direct.
My electricity in Lisbon is €0.18/kWh. The VPS is cheaper than leaving my tower on. I use https://contabo.com/en/vps/ for this.
Can confirm London. I work near Rotterdam and ping from my Contabo London VPS to the registry EPP is 2ms. Nuremberg is 18ms. For drop catching that is the game.
I do not catch domains. I just like measuring things.
Prices only go up
The London advantage will not last. Everyone in this thread just read it. Contabo London stock is already thin. By next month the API crowd will be split across zones and the drift window will shrink
Enjoy your 2ms while it lasts
This. I tried to provision Contabo London yesterday. "Expected availability: 2-3 weeks." Nuremberg was instant.
The secret is already dead.
I am on the waiting list for London. Birmingham to Nuremberg is not terrible but not great.
Has anyone tried their New York zone for .io? I know the registry is UK but transatlantic routing can be weird.
The .io registry EPP operates under Nominet infrastructure. Primary endpoint is London. There is no anycast. New York to London is ~70ms best case. You are at a disadvantage against London-based polling.
The batch processing drift WendyBird described earlier is the larger variable than 70ms vs 2ms. A service polling at 100ms intervals with wrong timing loses to one at 500ms intervals that detected the window shift.
Your location matters less than your observation of previous drops.
I run my shop on a .co.ke and came here to learn about .io for a side project. This is more complicated than I expected.
Is there a simple answer to: should I even try to catch dropped .io as a small player, or just pay aftermarket prices?
Simple is better
Aftermarket. The time you spend tuning scripts is time not running your shop.
Contabo at 4:07am is just GitOps for domains
Aftermarket is GitOps for your wallet
