Floor loading for a standard 42U rack at 2.5kW per 1U would exceed 100kW
Nobody actually fills 42U with these though right? I mean you'd melt. We leave 1U gap between every node and still the hot aisle is brutal.

42U and still growing

My old boss tried. 28U of compute, rest for switching. We had to shut down in summer because HVAC could not keep up. Now I have rules.

In Stockholm we have free cooling half the year but the other half, running 40kW+ per rack is just burning money. I moved inference workloads to Hetzner Cloud GPU instances for winter. Their Falkenstein plant is well built.

How's the scheduling there? Last I checked their GPU instances had wait times measured in days, not minutes.

For the H100s yes. A100 and L40S usually available same day. I use L40S for smaller models, it's fine.

Can we pull this back to the form factor question? I just want to know who here is actually getting 2.5kW 1U boxes into colo. My provider in Lisbon caps at 8kW per rack and charges eye-watering rates above that.

That's generous. My last Jersey colo was 5kW standard, anything over was custom quote and they acted like I asked for their firstborn.

Frankfurt is different. Most facilities here built for finance HFT, so 15-20kW per rack is table stakes. But you pay for it. Interxion FRA1, Equinix FR5, both handle high density fine.

Per rack or per square meter? Because those are very different numbers and I've seen both quoted.

Per rack, committed. Square meter pricing is for cage space, not power commitment. I always negotiate on kW, not floor tiles.
