Technically true, but same building, same power, same network fabric. I've seen a PDU fault take out both "separate" pools in Gravelines. Physical separation matters.

For real isolation you want different city minimum, different provider ideally. We keep prod in Madrid, backups in Beauharnois. Latency for ZFS send is ugly but survivable.

€3.50/mo for 256MB now. The €4/year was 2024 BF, never repeated. I grabbed 8 of them, 2 left alive, rest got suspended for "resource abuse" (running rclone, lol).

Who cares? It's a backup target. It runs whatever OVHcloud installs. Probably 5.10 LTS or some vendor frankenkernel.

Back on topic: my Wasabi bill this month was $3.42 for 489GB. No egress fees, no API nonsense. rclone sync from the 128MB NAT boxes works fine with --transfers 1 --checkers 1. Memory stays under 80MB resident.

Oh! I didn't know about those flags. I was just running `rclone sync` bare and it got OOM-killed immediately. Will try tonight, thank you!

For 5GB of notes, is Wasabi still the move? $6.99/TB minimum though right, so I'd pay for 1TB even using 5GB?

Wasabi has a 1TB minimum billing, yes. For 5GB look at Backblaze B2 proper: first 10GB free, then $0.005/GB. Or Storj DCS, 25GB free tier.

My restic → B2 setup on a 512MB Vultr works fine. restic itself uses ~60MB RAM for small repos. You could run it on the OVHcloud 256MB with a small swapfile.

Storj is interesting but I don't trust decentralized for backups. Too many moving parts, too many nodes disappearing. Give me S3-compatible with a bill I can pay.

Fair point. Denver has a weird surplus of enterprise retirements. I forget not everyone lives near a data center liquidation hub.

Still, the principle stands: provider snapshots are convenience, not strategy. Same city, same company, same terms of service that can change with 30 days notice.

My ZFS syncoid target is a Hostinger VPS in Phoenix — https://www.hostinger.com — $6/month, different company, different state, different legal jurisdiction. Overkill for lab stuff? Sure. But I sleep fine.

zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

Happened to me with a host that rhymes with "BigitalOcean." Free backups for years, then $4/mo per droplet with 6 weeks notice. I had 12 droplets. Do the math.

Now I run:

  • Provider backup: only on client sites where they insist and pay
  • DIY everywhere else
  • Annual "restore from scratch" drill on a random weekend

The drill is the important part. Last year I found my restic password had a typo in the password manager. Caught it because I tested.

Hi all, first time posting. I have a RackNerd VPS in LA, 1GB plan, no backups included. Reading this thread I'm confused - should I pay RackNerd for nothing, or do the rclone thing?

I only have maybe 15GB of data, a wordpress site and some photos. Budget is tight, I'm on $12/year plan.

What would you do in my place? Sorry if this was already asked.

RackNerd has no backup product at all. Zero. Your options are DIY or nothing.

For $12/year you can't complain. rclone to Google Drive free tier (15GB) or Storj (25GB free). Both work fine on 1GB RAM.

Do not rely on "the host probably has something." They don't. I have 4 RackNerd boxes, they're bare metal in the sense that you get a VM and a prayer.

Test your restore. Seriously.

I'd grab that free Google Drive or Storj tier and set up rclone with a cron job. 15GB fits comfortably.

But more importantly - when did you last test restoring your WordPress? Not the files, the whole thing. Database import, config edits, plugin compatibility. A backup of a broken site is just a broken site on pause.

My Contabo restore test last month took 4 hours because I forgot to note the MariaDB version. Document your steps. Future you will thank present you.
