Control panels should be separate purchase decisions

  • Sign up for raw compute from any provider (pro tip: check their API rate limits first)
  • Install your panel of choice separately
  • Migrate between hosts without learning a new dashboard every time

Heads up: cPanel pricing drove me to this. I now run Hestia on a Contabo KVM and DirectAdmin on another. Same workflow, different bills. Decoupling saved me maybe $140/year.

The tool I built compares panel+host combos: solusvm.com

Anyone else self-managing to escape licensing?

licensing is a suggestion

Ja I make a test with Vultr + Hestia and is very good but the DirectAdmin is more easy for my clients y'know I think separate is the future

Panel | route to me | panel load
---------------|-------------|-----------
cPanel | via Dallas | 180ms
DirectAdmin | via Chicago | 95ms
Hestia | local | 12ms

Route via Dallas adds 88ms to every click. Self-hosted panel on same LAN is baseline. Numbers don't lie.

1ms or I don't want it

Dig panel.contabo.com

Check your resolver first. TTL on their NS is 300, not 3600. Propagation takes five minutes, not an hour. Your local cache lies.

The thing about panels is that they are not just interfaces and they are not just billing mechanisms and they are not just user management layers and they are ecosystems and ecosystems have gravity and gravity pulls you in and once you are in the cPanel gravity well or the Plesk gravity well or whatever new gravity well they invent next year you are stuck and moving costs more than staying and this is by design and everyone knows it and we pretend we have choice but the choice is between one walled garden and another walled garden and the real freedom is building your own walls and choosing your own dirt and planting whatever you want and this is why I run a self-hacked VNC plus bash scripts on every host I own and it is terrible and beautiful and no one can take it from me and I cannot sell it to anyone and that is the trade and I accept it and I think everyone should accept their own t
