Contabo's 89-day uptime vs my 4-year sourdough starter

I had a roommate mistake my homelab for a space heater once

To be fair my ZX Spectrum +3 does run warm. Not "space heater" warm. "Cat sleeping on it" warm.

I have a C64 that has been running since 1989 if you count "sitting in a box" as running. The sourdough wins on actual metabolic activity.

I look after racks for clients and I will tell you what I tell them: 89 days means you have not patched. That is not uptime, that is technical debt with a uptime counter.

My sourdough died in 2019 because I went to a conference. The hotel WiFi worked. The starter did not. I came home to hooch and regret.

Now I keep a backup starter at my sister's in Barcelona. Geographic redundancy. Learned my lesson.

Contabo's panel changes more often than my flatmate

I automated my Contabo panel interactions with Playwright. I have a playbook for the login flow. A playbook for the reboot flow. A playbook for "they moved the DNS tab again."

This is not healthy infrastructure. This is Stockholm syndrome with YAML.

My sourdough starter has zero playbooks. I just feed it. It just lives. No idempotency checks required.

I must confess I do not understand why one would tolerate such a provider. In Osaka I use Sakura Internet for my personal VPS. It is not the cheapest. It is however predictable. The control panel has not changed in six years. I find this comforting.

Your starter sounds more predictable still. I believe I understand the appeal.

Built networks you use. Can't remember my own WiFi password.

I can tell you the latency from Lisbon to every Contabo DC except Mumbai by heart. Nuremberg is 42ms. London is 19ms. Singapore is 189ms and not worth it.

What I cannot tell you is when I last fed my own starter. It is in the fridge at my mother's. She thinks it is paint.

You are not wrong. But have you tried patching a Contabo kernel? They use a custom module for their VPS platform. Standard apt upgrade, reboot, panic, open ticket, wait 14 hours, get told to use their rescue image, discover rescue image is Debian 9 in 2024, weep.

The starter accepts whole wheat substitutions with more grace.

This is beautiful. I am stealing this for my autobiography.
