Media company here, we use AWS mostly. Their "customer carbon footprint tool" is a joke, but at least they don't claim 100% renewable for the diesel backup. They call it "transitioning."
Contabo is small, they copy the big cloud marketing playbook with smaller budget. Same game.
Same here. I have Contabo dedicated in Munich for 3 years now. Uptime excellent, price excellent, carbon... I don't know. I sleep fine.
The diesel test is Tuesday morning, I hear it once when I visited. Like airport nearby. You get used to.

Or maybe the lawyer finally read the claim. In Brazil we have PROCON, they love this kind of case. Contabo lucky they EU based, harder to sue for greenwashing.
I stay with local host, more expensive, less headache. If it works don't fix it.
This thread made me check my Hetzner invoice. They have "electricity from renewable sources" line item, 0.00 EUR. Transparent about what costs extra. Contabo hides it in the marketing.
Not defending Hetzner diesel, but the framing is different.
I asked Contabo support about this last year. They said "the diesel is for emergency only, not counted in operations." I asked how often emergency, they said "almost never." But the test is weekly... so emergency preparedness is operation, no?
They stopped replying.
The weekly test is operation, legally and practically. TÜV requires documented test. If you don't test, insurance void, certification void. So it IS operation, just regulated operation.
Contabo support should know this. Maybe they trained to deflect.
Late to thread, but has anyone compared to Ionos? They have "green hosting" too, German company, similar price range. I wonder if same diesel story.

Ionos is 1&1, they have own DC in Karlsruhe and others. I check their report, they mention "backup systems" but no diesel number. Slightly better wording than Contabo old claim, but not transparent like Hetzner.
The whole industry needs standard. Like food label: CO2 per kWh compute, diesel included. Dreaming maybe.
