Self-Host Everything

Contabo VPS went dark 4 days ago. IP completely unreachable, no route to host. Support ticket auto-responded, then silence.

Why pay for this when you can self-host it? I run docker compose on a mini PC at home with Caddy reverse proxy https://caddyserver.com, uptime better than most providers I've tried. But client wanted "managed" so here we are.

Traceroute dies at their edge. MTR shows 100% loss after hop 3. No status page update, no email, nothing.

Finally got a reply: "routing table corruption during maintenance." No ETA. Then "resolved." Then they offered 2 weeks credit... on the same node.

52 boxes across 8 providers and this is why I spread risk

Contabo incident breakdown:
- 4 days silent = unacceptable
- 2 weeks credit = $2.40 value at their prices
- my cost to migrate = 2 hours @ my rate = lol

I run 3x OVHcloud, 2x InterServer, rest scattered. $/GB/RAM Contabo was middle tier, now they're bottom tier.

Would not recommend.

Actually, "routing table corruption" usually means (in my experience (and I've seen this at three hosts (including one I consulted for))) they pushed a BGP config without filtering and blackholed prefixes. The fix is (was) likely a rollback, not a repair. The delay suggests (to me) they didn't have out-of-band management configured properly (or at all).

Two weeks credit on a compromised node is (frankly) worse than nothing.

Right then, proper nightmare that. We're not saints at Hostinger either—had a switch go mental last spring, took us six hours to suss it.

Difference is I was on here explaining myself at hour two, warts and all. Contabo's silence is the real crime, not the bodge.
