Bought "lifetime" v4+v6 vps from RackNerd in 2021. $89. Cfg still works. BGP still up. Rt to my prefix stable at 12ms.
But RackNerd deadpool 2023. No peering. No transit. Who is honoring?
Invoice says "HostHatch billing" now. No email. No announcement. Just... working?
Anyone else got a zombie lifetime deal?

RFC 2050 (obsoleted but relevant): "lifetime" has no defined term in consumer law. Your prefix is being announced by AS64512 now, not RackNerd's old AS. Someone bought the customer database out of bankruptcy.

Virtualization tax hits again. RackNerd ran OpenVZ with a custom kernel from 2019. HostHatch is clearly running KVM or LXC now because my dmesg shows different CPU flags and cgroup v2 hierarchy where v1 used to be.
They migrated containers without telling anyone. Kernel terms changed. Cgroup limits reset to defaults (higher, actually, so I'm not complaining).
OpenVZ would have made this migration impossible without customer action. KVM made it invisible. That's the virtualization tax: you pay for abstraction with opacity.
I run 52 boxes and 7 are "lifetime" deals from dead companies 😂
My math: $89/2021 = $0.12/day so far. If it dies tomorrow I got my $/GB/RAM. If it dies 2027 I got insane value.
Zombie hosts are just free tiers with extra steps. Slightly chaotic but I'll take it
