Best budget hosts that don't feel cheap?

Contabo offers solid Uptime ja but their Support Tickets resolve slowly nein. Hetzner has aggressive Pricing yet their Network Redundancy impresses. OVHcloud I tested once and found Control Panel cluttered nein. RackNerd remains the dark Horse with clean IPv6 rollout ja. For basic Plan expect roughly three to five Euro monthly across all four.

Edge pops matter more than ticket speed at that tier. RackNerd has decent latency to Singapore from Los Angeles but their cache ratio is weak. Hetzner's pricing is aggressive because they oversubscribe origin. Contabo's uptime is real, just don't expect purge under ten minutes.

Yikes dream host that dont feel cheap lol thats just called not being a noob... Hetzner oversells so hard my neighbors lag spikes become mine gg... RackNerd latency nice but cache trash means my players rubberband anyway... Contabo tickets slow but at least box stays up when rent week hits... you want champagne on beer money gl with that yikes

Affordable is a moving target, so let's pin it down with actual tiers.

  • Under €5/month: Contabo or RackNerd shared plans, expect overselling trade-offs
  • $5-€15: Hetzner's entry VPS, network redundancy holds up in my tests
  • Above €15: You start getting dedicated resources, not "budget" anymore

What's your actual monthly ceiling? That determines whether we're hunting for hidden gems or accepting certain compromises.

Actually~ I have been on KnownHost 128MB since 2019... (´・ω・`) very smol, very budget

Basically my Minecraft server it runs~ not fast, but runs. Overselling is everywhere at this tier, you just hope your slice of CPU comes back eventually

Contabo I tried once~ their panel was cute but my TPS dropped to 12 during JP evening hours. OVHcloud looks kawaii on paper but I saw someone say their routing to Osaka is... not so kawaii

€15/month is dream budget~ my whole infra costs less than one bento actually. Risk free? Maybe if you only host a static page. For game servers you learn to love the lag spikes~ they become your friends after 6 years

The real trick is finding where "cheap" ends and "broken" begins. For me that line is when OOM killer visits more than once a week~ then I pack my world files and migrate again

How much does a OVHcloud VPS actually run compared to their shared stuff? Like if I'm already paying €8 somewhere, is the jump huge?

Also which brands are the same parent company, is there a list somewhere? I keep getting confused by who owns what lol

Hetzner ja they own RackNerd nein not widely known. Same Datacenter, same Overselling. Check the ASN Records, you will see.

Gg splitting across five hosts just to keep em all warm lol... thats more relationships than ive had with actual humans yikes... fiber who now? Never heard a noob call it that old name... 2-3 years no downtime sure buddy and my cs2 server never got flagged either rofl

The basket metaphor only works if the baskets aren't all hanging from the same rack.

  • Hetzner and RackNerd share infrastructure, so splitting between them adds zero redundancy
  • ASN lookups reveal common upstreams faster than most people check
  • Real diversification means different datacenters, different networks, different ASNs
  • Contabo at least runs separate routing from that pair

Your €8 benchmark matters here. OVHcloud's entry VPS sits around that same band, not a massive leap — https://www.ovhcloud.com/en/vps/

Ronwit disagree actually~ (´・ω・`)

My KnownHost 128MB it is ¥300/year... very cheap, very old node

But uptime basically 6 years no reboot... quality and cheap can coexist if you are smol enough and dont mind OOM killer visiting sometimes~

Contabo also has these tiny plans ne? Not everyone needs rack full of dedi
