Ran the numbers on 12TB media archive. Glacier Deep Archive: $1/TB/mo storage. Retrieval: $0.02/GB bulk, BUT $0.10/GB for standard. Forgot the request fees. My "cheap" restore test cost $340.

  • Storage: $144/year
  • One full restore: $1,228 standard
  • Virtualization tax on data: you pay for abstraction you don't control

Need 3-tier with automation. Hot on HostHatch SSD, warm on RackNerd object https://www.racknerd.com, cold to deep archive with lifecycle rules. Writing a tool to orchestrate. Anyone solved the retrieval cost shock?

No "free egress" provider actually eats glacier retrieval fees. They shuffle costs elsewhere.

1. Your math is missing egress from the "free" tier
2. They cap it or throttle
3. Real TCO comparison:
3. A) Glacier + retrieval = $1,372 first year if one restore
3. B) Hetzner warm storage = €2,400 flat
3. C) Break-even at 2.3 restores
4. My vote: tiered with automation
5. Post your tool when ready

14Tbps scrubbed last quarter. Filtering at layer 3-4 cheaper than layer 7. Your backup egress is layer 7 to you, layer 4 to provider. They meter both.

¡the "free" egress is very marketing! ¿you see? Jajaja

I write long comment about p2p distribution as alternative but is very complicated, delete now

Short: ipfs for warm tier, no retrieval fee, is very good for archive
