Huh. I was so sure it was bufferbloat. My KnownHost box is in Amsterdam so maybe I'm seeing a different symptom. The Istanbul route doesn't even go through Sofia for me, it goes Bucharest-Budapest-Nuremberg. Contabo's status page says "degraded connectivity to Balkan region" which is vague as hell.

I run a smokeping from Helsinki against my Contabo Munich box. Loss started 48 hours ago, peaked at 22%, now down to 3%. The cable fault explanation fits the curve. No XMR though, I just use SEPA.

Stockholm here. My Contabo London is fine, 12ms stable. But my OVHcloud Gravelines box had 8% loss to Limburg yesterday, zero today. Different cable maybe? Or they load-balanced around it.

1ms or I don't want it

Confirmed, paid my Contabo last month in XMR. OVHcloud also works but their KYC is heavier, wanted a utility bill. For TR region backup I'm looking at Hostinger or maybe buying a Turkish provider with XMR, anyone done this?

Hostinger doesn't take XMR. I checked last week. Their billing is card, PayPal, Google Pay, some crypto through Coinbase Commerce but not Monero specifically.

I have 52 VPS and zero of them are in the Balkans because this exact thing happens every 18 months like clockwork. My Phoenix to Frankfurt path goes through Ashburn and London, never touches Sofia, so I sleep fine. Contabo is EUR billing which saves me forex fees versus RackNerd USD.

In Lyon I'm not seeing any loss to Munich but I'm not on Contabo, I've got an OVHcloud in Gravelines. Eastbound fiber is always a mess. Paying in XMR is a pain, most French hosts want SEPA or card.

Yeah I was wrong about OVHcloud too I think, I just assumed because they are big. My RackNerd Amsterdam is fine though, no Sofia in the path.

Exactly. The fault is geofenced. If your path is Bucharest-Budapest-Vienna you're on the Hungary-Romania corridor, not the Greece-Turkey-Bulgaria triangle where the cable lands.

shows the AS path, not just IPs. Look for AS6762 (Telecom Italia Sparkle) or AS1299 (Arelion) versus AS9121 (Turk Telekom).

AS1299 on my end. So Arelion, not the affected cable. That explains the clean path. Thanks for the pointer, I need to stop assuming all "EU east" routes converge.
