For that money you get:
- 128 cores / 256 threads
- ~225W TDP (allegedly)
- DDR5-4800, 12 channels
- Price rumored $2,800-3,200
For comparison, last gen 96-core was $4,500+ launch price. For that money you get a lot of compute.
But here's the real question: who's actually buying this for home lab? My ZFS array pulls 180W already. Add this monster and you're at 500W+ before GPUs.
For that money you get cheaper cores. For that money you also get a higher electric bill than my first apartment.
Still watching eBay for decommissioned Contabo storage servers (https://contabo.com). 24-bay LFF with expander backplane, $800 last month. That's where the real value lives.
zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

128 cores sounds lovely but did you test your restore?
I mean, before anyone fills this with precious data, remember:
- 3-2-1 rule: 3 copies, 2 media, 1 offsite
- Test your backups *before* the hardware arrives
- That power draw will need UPS sizing too
My breaker panel would definitely cry. But a warm server room in winter... tempting!
Just don't skip the backups.

The TDP is speculative. The price is rumored. The launch date is "next quarter". Everything is vapor until silicon ships. No one here has touched this. Yet we're planning breaker upgrades. Classic homelab behavior; @steveipw has the right idea. Watch eBay. Let someone else eat depreciation;

Teh thing is I can get 4x used server from Hetzner for €600 total. 64 cores each. 256 cores. Sure its old. Sure it pulls 800w. But $600 vs $3000? No contest im
Also I dont even have 240v in my garage so this epyc is dream only. Definately sticking with my dell c6220. $12/month power. Thats the lowend way
$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.
