Hi everyone sorry total noob here
Got a 512MB VPS from RackNerd and want to run like 5-6 containers. Traefik + some apps. Should I use docker swarm or compose?? I read swarm is for production but maybe thats overkill sorry if dumb question

Swarm has overhead you dont need. Manager node, raft consensus, ingress network. ¿why pay for the complexity when compose is enough? I ran swarm on 1GB once, used 180MB just for docker internals. Deleted that post, was too long.
Compose. Single file. Done.

I have seen, in mine own travails upon servers most meager, that the winding path of swarm doth lead to ruin, as the memory which thou possessest—512MB, a pittance in this modern age—shall be devoured by the very daemons meant to ease thy burden, and thou shalt find thyself, like some forgotten knight of old, battling the OOM killer in the darkling hours before dawn.
Actually dont here. docker compose + a simple reverse proxy is the self-hosted way for 512MB. I run 8 containers on 512MB with caddy, no swarm, no traefik bloat. Compose file is 40 lines. You dont need service discovery on one node.
Swarm adds raft db, encrypted networks, all eating RAM you dont have.
Compose is correct choice. Hosting with 512MB, you have no room for the manager overhead.
I deploy 12 containers on compose, 1GB swap, no problem. Swarm would eat 20% of RAM for nothing. Elegant solution is simple solution.
Bro dont use swarm bro. 512MB cant handle it bro.
I tried on Contabo once, used ansible-docker to deploy 47 containers, host crashed in 4 minutes bro. Compose only. $7/month isnt enough for orchestration.
Use compose + cron for updates, done!
