Has anyone actually measured the disk I/O on these packed nodes? My suspicion is the memory pressure is half the story, the other half is everyone swapping to the same SATA SSD.

1 IOPS is basically a mechanical hard drive from 2005. Simfs on OpenVZ6 doesn't even give you your own block device, it's all loopback through the host. Of course it collapses under contention.
I don't understand why people still buy OpenVZ in 2024. KVM has been the standard for a decade. Is it really just the price?

Price and inertia. RackNerd still has OpenVZ7 templates because migrating customers is harder than provisioning new nodes. The customers who know better left, the ones who don't know what KVM is keep paying.
Also: some control panels charge per-VM licensing that makes dense OpenVZ look cheaper to the provider, even if the experience is worse.

SolusVM doesn't care if it's OpenVZ or KVM for the license count. It's per-VM either way. The density advantage is purely memory oversell: OpenVZ has no KVM overhead per VM, so you can pack more 256MB instances before the host bleeds out.
So what's the actual alternative for a cheap NAT VPS? I need outbound-only for a few Telegram bots, nothing heavy.

I run three Telegram bots on a 512MB BuyVM slice in Las Vegas. KVM, $2/month, actual memory isolation. The NAT plans are in their "Slice" line, you have to ask in IRC for stock but they exist — https://buyvm.net.
