Paul I think you're right about the oversell but your ticket strategy is all wrong. You don't reject the 512MB upgrade, you take it, screenshot the beancounters, then open a second ticket. Build the paper trail.
I've done support desk. Two tickets with evidence beats one angry ticket every time.

Amsterdam node or US? I keep client sites on their Amsterdam location, never had memory issues but I'm on KVM with 2GB minimum. The NAT VPS line is a different beast entirely, they don't even list it on the main site anymore.

US, one of the LA ones I think. The NAT VPS page is still there if you have the direct link, they just don't advertise it. $10/year. You get what you pay for, I know, I know. But "barely functions" and "functions" are different things.

For my association we use a VPS from OVH in Gravelines, 2GB for 4 euros. I do not understand why someone would pay for 256MB. The price difference is not so big and the problems are very big.

Because the ToS on the $10/year plans are hilarious. "No IRC, no proxies, no game servers, no mining, no file sharing, no video streaming, no audio streaming, no high CPU, no cron jobs more frequent than hourly."
They don't want you to use it. They want you to forget about it and auto-renew.
This. The business model is churn, not service. Node fills up, oldest containers get oom-killed first, those customers leave, new ones buy the "deal." It's a rotating door with a billing system attached.
I had the exact same RackNerd NAT plan. Migrated to VirMach's 512MB KVM during one of their sales, $12/year. Night and day. OpenVZ6 to KVM isn't even a fair fight.
VirMach has its own thread right now about network issues in Buffalo. Every budget provider has a skeleton. The question is which skeleton dances on your use case.
I stayed on CloudCone for my lowest-priority stuff because at least they're honest about being Los Angeles only. No geographic surprises.

ZFS on my home NAS has 3TB of snapshots. My "cloud" VPS? rsync nightly to that NAS, because I trust my Denver basement more than any $10/year node.
RAID is not a backup. A cheap VPS sure as hell is not a backup.
Following this thread closely. Was about to pull the trigger on a 512MB RackNerd for a monitoring node.
