Won a DL380 G9 for $37, now what? · Dedicated Servers

119 days, hope you got that fan curve sorted

Valheim lag when the fans spin up

Same room gang here too, my DL360p sounds like it's preparing for takeoff when I spin up a VM. ILO manual mode is the only way, set it to 25% and accept the slightly toasty DIMMs

Did you ever s...

AMD embedding Microsoft Pluton on server chips · Dedicated Servers

Lol pluton on server silicon is just trusted computing with better marketing tbh | been running coreboot on a romed8-2t since last year | no pluton no me no problem | debian stable on that box never had a firmware callback I didn't compile myself | kids buying epyc 9005 are gonna get burned when the...

Single IP, bunch of sites—how do you split them at home? · Web Hosting

Run the numbers on a NUC drawing 15W

I did. My kill-a-watt says 23W at the wall for the i5 NUC, plus the modem, plus the switch. Call it 35W continuous. At Portland General Electric rates that's roughly $3.50/month. Contabo VPS with comparable RAM is $4.99. The gap is nois...

Single IP, bunch of sites—how do you split them at home? · Web Hosting

The "old browser" boogeyman again. XP died in 2014, let it rot. If someone's still on IE6 that's a them problem, not your homelab architecture.

Re: OVHcloud — their CP is a dumpster fire but the price is right. I had a box there for like six months, only moved because I wanted ARM and they didn't h...

Single IP, bunch of sites—how do you split them at home? · Web Hosting

You don't need to mess with ports or DynDNS for this. Your webserver (nginx, caddy, whatever) reads the Host header from the request and routes accordingly. One public IP, port 80/443, infinite domains.

I run maybe a dozen sites off a single Contabo IP at home. Reverse proxy handles the rest. DynDN...

Looking for someone to split 42U rack in Dallas · Dedicated Servers

If you share a rack with someone do they have access to your servers or is there locks

You get cage nuts and your own rails. The other tenant cannot touch your gear unless you authorize a cross-connect. Contabo St. Louis does not do individual cabinet locks on shared racks,...

I used a domain broker and saved 40% vs. direct negotiation · Domain Names

How do you know broker actually did the work

You don't, not really. I used Vultr's brokerage for a .org last year, similar process to GeorgeNmp. They sent me the ownership chain docs, the WIPO case PDF, the whole paper trail. But could I verify they actually talked to the owner...

Is it weird to name your servers after books you've never finished · Off Topic

Tbh I name mine after distros I abandoned

The arch box became the deb box became the void box and I never finished any of those installs either

"ulysses" still running after 8 years is iconic tho. Respect. That book is like 700 pages of stream of consciousness which is basically what your post was...
