Fiber question: did anyone here actually run cable for a venue? I did once, temporary install for a festival, 48-port switch in a tent. The band was forgettable. The cable management haunts me.

I'm with @PascalOvid on the niche angle. Most open source panels try to be everything and die of complexity. Also @pam3 has a point about tax. Stripe Tax exists now but it's not free and the API surface is annoying. For tiny hosts VAT MOSS alone is a nightmare.

I worked at an ISP and we used SmokePing for latency trends. RRD graphs, ugly as sin, but you see degradation before it becomes outage.

Not for everyone. Needs a server, needs patience. But the historical data saved us from blaming the wrong upstream three times.

Late to this but I want to push back on the "status pages are a scam" thing. I run fiber installs in rural areas and my clients are not technical. They see "server error" and they panic-call me at 6am because they think I cut their internet.

A real status page with actual incident history saves me...

I worked with a provider who had an honest status page once. Small Canadian company. They listed every incident, no matter how minor. Went out of business in 18 months. Customers fled at the first yellow indicator.

The market punishes honesty. Expect theater.
