Two boxes in two regions with OVHcloud private network between them. EUR 11.04 + private network free if same project. I do this for my stuff, works fine.

Has anyone tried using mosh as a fallback? It runs over UDP and can survive IP changes, but I wonder if it would have helped here since the port was just wrong, not the IP.

DHT22 accuracy is ±2°C. In a datacenter you want ±0.5°C or better. You will false-positive yourself to death or miss the actual event.

SHT30 or SHT40 on I2C, same ESP32, same price basically, ±0.2°C. Still not calibrated but at least the numbers mean something.

I run monthly on Vultr for production and yearly on RackNerd for backup VPS. RackNerd $12/year deal, if it dies I lose a lunch. Vultr at $40/month adds up fast.

The "gambling" framing is wrong. It's risk allocation. Different buckets.

40 ms seems low for "significant"

LayerZhao, also first post. 4 hosts in 5 years, all Chinese or Singapore-based. The issue is ICP filing. Without it, your site is invisible from mainland China. With it, your data is visible to authorities. I chose hosts that let me do the filing without hosting the sensitive data.
