One 4GB box at OVHcloud or four 1GB boxes spread around for redundancy?
Four tiny ones. For that money you get better failure isolation and you can geo-distribute. Specs:
- 4x 1GB = 4 cores spread, 4 IPs
- ZFS send/recv between boxes for backup
- One dies, three keep serving
one big box = single point of failure. for that money you get no redundancy on hardware layer. Auction servers with local RAID are different story, but VPS is not that.
zfs send | zfs receive. repeat.

VCore, so Xeon E or AMD EPYC depending on which Gravelines node you land on. You don't get to pick. Their VPS line is KVM on shared host, not dedicated thread.

I have 12 OVHcloud VPS across three regions. The EPYC nodes bench about 15% faster single-thread but you can't request them. It's lottery. I track which host node I'm on with
lscpu
and screenshot the results.

I benchmarked both configs last month on OVHcloud Warsaw. Results:
- 1x 4GB: 1823 Geekbench 6 single, 4912 multi
- 4x 1GB: 1511-1987 single (lottery), 4100-5200 aggregate multi depending on neighbor noise
The big box is more predictable. Four small ones have higher ceiling but you need to load-balance to use it. I used https://bench.sh
fio, iperf, geekbench. results or gtfo.
