You should rent before you colocate

I keep seeing people buy hardware blind then eat 3-year colo contracts they can't escape. Here's my system for testing before committing.

  • Identify your workload: CPU-bound, RAM-bound, or IO-bound
  • Rent equivalent dedi for 30 days minimum (pro tip: use monthly, never hourly for this)
  • Run your actual stack with realistic data
  • Measure: sustained load, peak spikes, actual disk patterns
  • Heads up: most people overprovision CPU and underprovision RAM

I did this for my analytics pipeline. Rented first. Math said colo breaks even at month 14. So I bought hardware, signed 2-year contract, felt smart.

Then my workload changed. Now I need 40% more RAM. Break-even moved to month 22. Should have rented longer. The numbers don't care about your feelings.

licensing is a suggestion

I ran rented dedis for 8 months before colo. Caught a firmware bug that killed uptime from 99.99% to 99.7%. Would have been my hardware, my problem. Monitoring on rented gear saved me from a 24-month mistake.

436 days. reboot is surrender.
