I run monthly on Vultr for production and yearly on RackNerd for backup VPS. RackNerd $12/year deal, if it dies I lose a lunch. Vultr at $40/month adds up fast.
The "gambling" framing is wrong. It's risk allocation. Different buckets.

In Brussels I would not yearly with a US LLC that has no EU establishment. No ODR, no small claims path. The jurisdiction matters as much as the billing cycle.

But my GreenCloudVPS yearly is $24, already three years, can sleep peacefully. Friend using RackNerd yearly $18, last month network down 6 hours, ticket no answer for two days.
So cheap cheap got reason one.

This is the missing piece. In Ukraine I have no such protection. I yearly with Hetzner because they are German, I can sue in German court if needed. I monthly with local UA host because they can disappear overnight and often do.
The billing cycle is a proxy for legal recourse. Not the same thing, but correlated.

I think if the company old already, like Leaseweb 20+ years, yearly ok. New new company, monthly better. Common sense only.

You are describing a different company or a different timeline. DNS doesn't lie, their NS still resolve.
Following this thread. I yearly with Hostinger for shared hosting, $36/year. If they die tomorrow I move DNS and restore from UpdraftPlus in 2 hours. The yearly discount pays for my backup plugin.
Monthly would cost me $108/year. That's real money for a hobby blog.
In São Paulo we get killed on USD conversion and IOF tax. Yearly saves me 15% on forex spread plus the provider discount. I use Hostinger's São Paulo DC for local latency — https://www.hostinger.com.
Monthly is a luxury for people with EUR or USD salaries.

Vultr offers reserved instances and capacity reservations, which are basically yearly prepay with a different name. They are not "monthly-only."
Their pricing page literally has a slider for monthly vs hourly. No yearly checkbox but the reserved instances are 1-3 year commitments.
