Windows Server on 512MB RAM—has anyone made this not terrible?

I have been tasked with deploying a Windows Server instance on a 512MB RAM machine. The experience has been less than satisfactory. I am seeking guidance from those who have successfully optimized this configuration.

The machine in question is hosted at RackNerd. I have attempted Core edition but the idle footprint remains excessive. I am aware of registry modifications and service reductions. I would like to know which specific interventions have proven most effective.

Has anyone achieved a stable, sub-150MB idle state? I am interested in concrete numbers, not speculation.

Why waste money on windows license for 512MB when linux exists. No market for this.

For that money you get a used Dell R230 with 32GB RAM and run Hyper-V proper. Specs:

  • E3-1230v5 $80 auction
  • 32GB DDR4 ECC $45
  • 2x 240GB SSD $30

Your 512MB VPS is throwing good money after bad. ZFS on the host, thin provision the windows guest with 4GB minimum.
