Who runs a mail server in 2024 and hasn't been blacklisted?

Did you test your restore? Because that's what matters, dear.

I ran postfix+dovecot on a Time4VPS VPS through 2023. 3-2-1 rule for everything, including mail spools. My IP at HostHatch lasted eight months before Microsoft blacklisted the entire /24—no individual fault, just neighborhood guilt. I migrated to Migadu in January 2024 and have not touched mail infrastructure since.

  • Self-hosting: full control, zero sleep, constant blacklist monitoring
  • Migadu: $9/month, they handle reputation, you handle content
  • Hybrid: self-host front-end, relay through Mailgun/Postmark

The war stories will come. I am just glad you asked before learning the hard way. Did you test your restore?

3-2-1 or you're already dead

I made it fourteen months (like this: October 2023 to December 2024) on a KnownHost IP. I thought I had cracked it. Proper rDNS. SPF. DKIM. The full sacrament. Then Hostinger had a spam outbreak on their Amsterdam range. My IP was two octets away from the offender. Guilt by topology.

I moved to Migadu in January. My blood pressure improved measurably. Self-hosting email is a hobby for the masochistic or the unemployed. Semicolons do not help. Nothing helps. The reputation economy has moved on.
