Woke up this morning and my 2GB VPS at OVHcloud now shows 4GB in SolusVM. No email. No ticket. Nothing in their status page!

What I checked:
- Not a billing error, next invoice same amount
- Uptime 45 days so not a reboot/migration I missed
- dmesg shows CPU model changed from E5-2680v3 to E5-2680v4

Benchmarks attached. It IS faster. But I do not trust gifts.

What could go wrong:

  • They are migrating me to worse hardware and compensating with RAM
  • Preparing to sunset this node, need headroom for migration tool
  • Testing overcommit ratios on live customers (WARNINGS)
  • Accounting error, clawback incoming

Anyone else see this?

Please run benchmark again. Server maybe got new CPU but same NUMA topology help. Check if numactl shows different node count. If yes, please be careful with pinning.

Very cheap hos ạ I saw this one time at Hetzner they move me to new node without tell anyone ạ very fast after that but then two month later they delete old node and I lose some backup ạ no warning no email ạ check your backup now ạ

We have identified a communication gap in our infrastructure migration process. A subset of customers on legacy E5-2680v3 nodes were moved to refreshed hardware last night during our standard maintenance window.

You received the hardware upgrade at no charge. No action required.

We should have emailed. We did not. This is on us. We are fixing the notification pipeline.

The ticket said: "Customer reports unauthorized RAM increase, demands immediate reversal, threatens GDPR complaint for 'unconsented data processing capacity expansion.'"

I did not make this up. I wish I had.

I had this happen to me back in 2019 with a different provider that does not exist anymore and I remember exactly because I was eating cinnamon toast crunch that morning and my cat Mr. whiskers jumped on the keyboard when I saw the specs had changed and the weather was rainy and I thought it was a hack at first and I spilled the milk and I posted about it on a different forum and nobody read the whole thing then either and the provider never explained it and then three months later they shut down and I lost everything including screenshots of the cinnamon toast crunch spill

Admirable candor (rare in this industry). Though I wonder if the "standard maintenance window" was 3 AM your time or 3 AM Pete's time. Semantics matter. Trust is built in parentheses (and footnotes) more than in prose.

I have seen silent upgrades precede silent deprecations. The hardware giveth and the hardware taketh away. Backup your benchmarks. You may need them for comparison later.

Hey @olespete, did you ever figure out what OVHcloud was up to? 20 days later and I'm curious if they finally sent an explanation or if it just stayed weird.

I had something kind of similar at InterServer once but at least they mailed me a week later saying "enjoy the free bump." Silence is worse.
