See this is exactly the nightmare I live with my OVHcloud box, eight years and every reboot feels like russian roulette but I cant afford to move everything right now. Power bills eating you alive I get that, here in Mexico City its the heat that kills you trying to keep anything cool. Those Xeon E5 v4 chips though, at least they were built proper, not like the garbage slapped together some places sell now. Still doing their job is the part that scares me most, because one morning they just wont.
When Is a Server Too Dead to Revive?
@phasmapiotr your DeLorean crack got an actual laugh, thank you
But this "2-3x throughput" line gets trotted out every hardware refresh cycle like clockwork. Sure, newer silicon sips nicer per watt. My question is whether your workload even saturates the old crate. If your OVHcloud antique is loafing at 15% CPU all day, who cares if an EPYC does it at 40W less?
The revenue argument only holds if you're turning away work. Otherwise you're spending money to solve a problem that exists on vendor slides, not in your rack.
Power math matters for density, not for some guy's single box he babysat since Obama.
