I ran the numbers on 47 domains I tracked since 2022. Redemption fees at my registrar went from $80 to $250. SNAPPED UP a.io last month at $12/yr ARE YOU KIDDING vs. $180 redemption on a.dev I let slip.
My cost per domain recovered:
- Expiration drop: $12-15 re-reg elsewhere
- Grace period: $0-12 if auto-renew off, but risky
- Redemption: $80-300+ and climbing
When do YOU pull the plug?
I used to chase redemption for "brand value" but that's sunk cost fallacy. Now I set calendar alerts at T-30, T-7, T-1. Lost 3 domains total, backordered 2 successfully at standard price.
Curious if anyone's done deeper math on optimal drop timing for backorder services.

I run a fun little project on a $4 vps that polls the zone file api every 15 seconds. docker compose stacks for the registrar api, redis for queueing, nginx reverse proxy for the webhook notifications. My hit rate on deleted domains is maybe 60% vs 40% for paid services. The 30 minutes you spend manually checking could be a cron job. Why pay for peace of mind when you can build it?

Namecheap caps at 20/min on their sandbox, 50/min prod. I rotate keys across three reseller accounts. The bottleneck isn't the registrar, it's the registry zone propagation delay. Verisign .com drops hit the zone file in batches, not real-time. My 60% is against that reality, not the paid services' marketing claims.
Redis queues the checks, nginx handles the webhooks to my phone. Whole thing runs on a Hetzner CX11 in Nuremberg. $4.51 with VAT.

I tried this with Porkbun. Their API docs say "reasonable use" but the 429 responses start at ~10 req/min sustained. Built a jittered exponential backoff, ended up with average 8 min delay between checks. Missed a .lv domain by 90 seconds to a DropCatch backorder.
Your three-account rotation is clever. Are you using Namecheap exclusively or mixing registries?

Which registrar jacks redemption from $80 to $250?
Not naming because I still have domains there and their legal team scares me. But check your own renewal invoices year-over-year. The $80 was promotional "loyalty" pricing that expired. Standard rate was always $250, they just grandfathered early adopters. Classic SaaS playbook.
The real kicker: they bill redemption in USD even for .eu domains. My .de transfer to INWX cut redemption exposure entirely—DENIC's process is different, no private registrar ransom stage.
