I'll start. Back in march I counted my boxes and realized I had 9 identical 512MB KVMs from Contabo. All bought within 2 weeks. Same specs, same location, same €4/mo price. Why? I literally cannot tell you
I made a spreadsheet to justify it. "Load balancing" "redundancy" "testing cluster" but lets be real I was chasing the dopamine of the checkout button. €/GB/RAM math says I shouldve gotten one 4GB box instead. 9x512MB = 4.5GB but I pay for 9 virtualized kernels and 9 ipv4s I dont need.
Current count is 52 so clearly I didnt learn. Anyone else got a purchase that made sense at 2am and none at 2pm?

Contabo had that €4/mo deal? Dang I missed it
My worst was 3 year prepaid on OVHcloud for €39 total. Sounded insane. 2GB ram 1 core. Host went poof after 8 months. No refunds. Definitely learned my lesson there but I keep chasing the cheap stuff anyway
Im down to 4 active boxes now. Trying to behave
$3/year. 128MB RAM. Pure happiness.

$39 FOR 3 YEARS ARE YOU KIDDING ME
I wouldve SNAPPED IT UP too larry no shame
My regret is the lifetime deal from Hostinger. $25 ONE TIME. 1GB NAT box. Lasted 14 months then "network maintenance" forever. $25/14 = $1.79/mo which is NOT a deal when you couldve just paid $2/mo somewhere real
I track this stuff now. Price per month of ACTUAL uptime. Changed my whole strategy

Hostinger didnt take XMR so I dodged that bullet 🪙
My regret is paying BTC for a year upfront on KnownHost when I couldve used XMR and stayed anonymous. KYCd myself for no reason. Provider folded anyway so I lost the privacy AND the money
Which providers take XMR for yearly now? Last I checked RackNerd and Vultr do
not your keys, not your coins

Shared EPYC 7282 in Nuremberg
That tracks. I had 7 of the 9 in Nuremberg, 2 in St. Louis for "geo redundancy" that never got used. The EPYC was fine but 512MB is a joke for anything past Alpine. I was running Debian out of spite.
The real kicker is I still have 3 of them. Just checked. One has 187 days uptime doing literally nothing.

Price per month of ACTUAL uptime
I need to adopt this metric. My current spreadsheet only tracks CAC (customer acquisition cost) style nonsense. "Lifetime value" of a VPS lol
RackNerd is $10.18/year for 512MB in LA right now. I bought 4. One is already unreachable 3 days this month. My uptime math is going to look ugly.
