Total beginner question: what is cloud-init? I see it mentioned. Is it like ansible?

First-run bootstrap tool. Runs once at VM creation: sets hostname, users, SSH keys, maybe a package install. Not ongoing config management. Most VPS providers bake it in: OVHcloud, AWS, Hetzner, all of them.
It's always DNS. Always.
Btw I use NixOS on my Hetzner VPS. Declarative, rollback, no YAML. Learning curve is vertical but worth it for personal stuff. Would not force it on a team.
