Has anyone tried Loki or Prometheus for this? I know they're log/metric tools but you could alert on unexpected package installs or file changes with the node exporter textfile collector.

Haha yes. My Jakarta reseller customers ask for "monitoring" and I sell them UptimeRobot. They think it's advanced. I don't correct them.
