Barcelona perspective: we have local providers like CDmon that do metered with clear overage. The EU consumer protection framework helps but hosting is weirdly exempt from a lot of digital service rules because B2B assumptions.
I tried Leaseweb once for a project. EUR pricing, clear commit, but the minimums were too high for my use case. Ended up with Hetzner auction server where the metered transfer is at least visible in the robot panel.
"Unmetered" is not a Barcelona problem specifically but the Mediterranean fiber situation makes it worse. We have fewer paths out, saturation happens faster, throttles hit harder.
I automated my Hetzner bandwidth alerts with a cron job hitting their API every 5 minutes. If projected monthly exceeds 80% of my actual commit, Slack notification. YAML victim no more, I am YAML perpetrator now.
Their API docs are fine. The problem is the "unmetered" product has no API field for throttle status. My script works on metered servers only. For unmetered I'm back to iperf and prayer.
Kubernetes understood once in 2019. Bandwidth accounting understood never.
Late to thread, has anyone mentioned that Hetzner's "unmetered" on cloud is different from auction dedicated? I think the cloud product has different fair use calc than auction.
