Hi all — Jane here from the support side, though today I'm the customer with a cautionary tale.
I was reviewing personal expenses last month and found an annual auto-renewal for a VPS I hadn't logged into since 2024. Two years of payments, zero deployments. Here's what I found:
Provider: Vultr (1 vCPU, 2GB RAM, 40GB SSD)
OS: Debian 11, unpatched since install
Running services: ssh, nginx default page
Total bandwidth used: 3.7GB in 24 months
Cost: $48/year × 2 = $96 of digital compost
The nginx log showed 11,000 hits — mostly bots, one confused human in March who emailed root@ (bounced). I felt foolish, then relieved I hadn't leaked anything worse than a default index.html.
Has anyone else done this? I'm curious whether to frame this as "set and forget gone wrong" or "accidental digital preservation."
Actually I have a similar Story with a Hetzner VPS that was running for three Years without me touching it because the autoRenewal was set up with an old PayPal Account I actually forgot about or? And when I finally checked it there was nothing on it except the default Page and some old sshkeys but the funny Thing is that the Server was still generating Backup snapshots every week which I was paying for additionally so actually I paid for Backups of an empty System for thirtysix Months which is something I only tell People I trust actually.
Oh yes, in server like this I have too! My little szerwer on RackNerd, I forget for 18 month. No? I go to check and find little script still running, from old project. To backup I never make, but is still there. I think "delete?" but then I feel sentiment, so I keep. Now I pay for museum of my mistakes. Very polish tradition, no?
