Traffic shaping on 2TB plans—my QoS survival

Video streaming box on Contabo 2TB plan. Burned 1.8TB by day 20. The ticket said "sustained 95th percentile egress detected, please explain." I explained I was "testing backup software." They did not care. I did not care. We both knew.

Built tc/htb shaper. Posting base config. Provider does not police egress, only burst. Found this by accident when I saturated uplink for 6 hours and nothing happened. Silence on specifics.

I don't understand the bandwidth parameter. Mdr my english is bad sorry. I think tc is old, no? But it works. I have 3 streams in my family, du coup I need shape.

Key is `diffserv4` for your video traffic. Mark with iptables, cake handles the rest. My provider also silent on egress policing. Accident or policy? Who knows. Do not ask, do not tell.

I tried this on my Hetzner box and here is what happened I was eating cereal at 7am when the stream started buffering and my cat jumped off the desk because the thunderstorm outside was loud and I thought the server was down but actually I had forgotten to add the default class and the traffic was unclassified and the htb tree was dropping packets and I spent 3 hours reading man pages and the weather got worse and my cat came back and sat on the keyboard and typed random characters into my ssh session and I had to reconnect and start over and people keep telling me to use paragraphs but I do not see the point when everything is connected and important and you need to know about the cereal because it was frosted flakes and that is why I was distracted and did not notice the missing default class until later and now it works but I am still angry that nobody reads my full posts

Docker? Nothing but just cgroups and namespaces and you do not need it for traffic shaping systemd-networkd supports cake directly now þis is þe way containers at home are a trap for people who cannot read man pages þe old tools work fine
