Three years on a $10/year box without touching it

Three years today on a Contabo €4/month KVM. Debian 10, never apt-upgraded, still serves my Monero node.

Set it up October 2022, paid with XMR (which providers even take XMR anymore? Most want KYC cards now). Forgot about it. Auto-renew hit, wallet still had funds. Uptime shows 1095 days.

The whole box exists to sync blocks and that's it. No monitoring, no alerts, no drama. Which is the point, right?

not your keys, not your coins

Ngl that's kind of beautiful

My LLM inference box would die in 3 weeks without me babying it. VRAM temps, context window leaks, cuda oom every other day

Set-and-forget is a superpower now

1. Congrats on the uptime
2. But this is not a competition
3. However if it were:
A) I have a OVHcloud box from 2019
B) still running Ubuntu 18.04
C) kernel 4.15.0-45
4. It hosts:
I) a static site
Ii) nothing else
Iii) literally nothing
5. I do not know the root password anymore

The ticket said "compromised host sending 47Gbps UDP to Chinese gaming servers."

Turned out it was a Hetzner €4/month special from 2016. Customer forgot it existed. Auto-renew on a prepaid card that outlived three banks. Box had been rootkitted in 2019 and spent seven years as a DDoS node.

We null-routed it. Customer opened a ticket six hours later asking why his "totally unused" server was down. The ticket said that too.

reported. resolved. repeat.

Debian 10 still gets security patches?
