There's your first problem. Contabo runs OpenVZ 7 with a 3.10 kernel last I checked. You're paying the virtualization tax twice: once for containerization overhead without real isolation, once for cgroup limits that burst without warning.
KVM at Vultr runs $22/year for 1GB. The extra $4 buys you:
- Actual virtio drivers
- Kernel selection
- No neighbor noise on io_uring
The "sale" price is the market rate. OpenVZ hosts just normalize worse baseline performance.

Worse than that. I just checked their ASN peering. Contabo's Nuremberg location is single-homed to Telia in some prefixes. For $18/year that's fine, but don't pretend it's premium infrastructure.
The real comparison nobody makes: their "NVMe" is actually RAID-60 SATA with a hot cache layer. IOPS collapse under parallel compile jobs. I tested this in January on a 4GB plan.
Contabo 4GB: 12k IOPS sustained, then 3k after 30 seconds
Hetzner CX21: 35k IOPS flatline
Hetzner's €4.51/month beats the "sale" once you factor in the CPU steal time.
