This host's 'anniversary sale' is the same price as last month

Contabo's "anniversary sale" email hit my inbox this morning. Same 2GB OpenVZ plan, same $18/year price they ran in February. I keep a blameless postmortem culture even for vendor marketing, so here's the transparency: I pulled my invoice from last month.

"Anniversary sale" today: $18.00

The countdown timer claims 72 hours left. It claimed 72 hours left on March 1st too. My error budget for fake urgency is exhausted. Screenshots attached.

Transparency means calling this what it is: manufactured scarcity. The plan itself is fine. I have three months of uptime data and one unplanned outage (47 min, no root cause published). But the marketing transparency is a different SLO entirely.

Anyone else tracking this? I maintain a spreadsheet of advertised vs actual pricing for budget hosts.

There's your first problem. Contabo runs OpenVZ 7 with a 3.10 kernel last I checked. You're paying the virtualization tax twice: once for containerization overhead without real isolation, once for cgroup limits that burst without warning.

KVM at Vultr runs $22/year for 1GB. The extra $4 buys you:

• Actual virtio drivers
• Kernel selection
• No neighbor noise on io_uring

The "sale" price is the market rate. OpenVZ hosts just normalize worse baseline performance.

Joy your english is fine, better than my bahasa. Hostinger timer was red too? Same script maybe. I check Contabo from London, 34ms via KnownHost. Not buying either way.

Worse than that. I just checked their ASN peering. Contabo's Nuremberg location is single-homed to Telia in some prefixes. For $18/year that's fine, but don't pretend it's premium infrastructure.

The real comparison nobody makes: their "NVMe" is actually RAID-60 SATA with a hot cache layer. IOPS collapse under parallel compile jobs. I tested this in January on a 4GB plan.

Contabo 4GB: 12k IOPS sustained, then 3k after 30 seconds
Hetzner CX21: 35k IOPS flatline

Hetzner's €4.51/month beats the "sale" once you factor in the CPU steal time.

From Stockholm that's 28ms to Falkenstein, 34ms to Nuremberg. I run WireGuard mesh so latency matters. Contabo London would be 18ms but their London stock is always "waitlist" when I check.

The timer is fake, the stock is fake, what's actually real?

Three strikes and I'm still here because migration is work. That's the real lock-in.

I pay Contabo in EUR from Mexico City, they charge my Santander card with DCC markup. Final price always higher than advertised. Same with OVHcloud.

In Hetzner I opened EUR balance account, transfer via Wise, save the 3.5%. Small thing but at $18/year the forex spread is significant percentage.
