Regards, I am very angry. Last year I register domain at some registrar (not say name), price was $15. Now renewal come, they want $89!! I check and is same domain, no special thing.

I know this trick, they hook you with cheap first year then gouge. But $89 for .com is crazy. I search and see transfer to other place is possible.

I want make guide for others who get same shock. Steps I find:

  • Unlock domain at current registrar
  • Get EPP code (auth code)
  • Remove privacy protection if have
  • Go to new registrar, start transfer, put EPP code
  • Pay for one year at new price (I find $12 at Vultr — https://www.vultr.com/pricing/)
  • Wait 5-7 days, done

Is correct? I not want lose domain. Any tip welcome.

Regards

Sorry couldn't resist. Serious though: check if your current registrar has transfer lock with 60-day rule after certain changes. Some shady ones auto-enable privacy or update contact info before renewal to trigger lock.

Also what's the specs on the server running your dns? Humblebrag: my homelab has 256GB but for dns any old box works.
