I DIDN'T EVEN OPEN A TICKET! I GOT AN EMAIL FROM CONTABO SAYING "WE NOTICED AN 18-MINUTE NETWORK BLIP ON YOUR NODE, HERE IS A $2.50 CREDIT"! I HAD ZERO MONITORING! I WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN! THIS IS SUSPICIOUS AS HELL! WHAT IS THE CATCH!

That's lovely dear, but did you test your restore?

More seriously, a proactive credit is unusual in this market. Checklist for you:

  • Verify the downtime actually happened (check your own logs if you have any)
  • Confirm the credit was applied to your account, not just promised
  • Review your TOS for any arbitration clauses you may have just triggered

The 3-2-1 rule applies to trust too. Keep three copies of your skepticism.

3-2-1 or you're already dead

Eh $2.50 leh. Can lor. They send email already means their system detect one. No need so sus lah. You want them ignore meh?

Fink about it no? Ssmall money to make you sstay. Happy customer tell friend. Thanks to them no? I got same from Vultr once. $1.20. Sstill with them. Sserver running two year. No?

The virtualization tax on goodwill: that $2.50 costs them nothing in marginal infrastructure but buys measurable retention. I've seen providers automate this. They monitor node-level packet loss, correlate with customer LTV, and trigger credits only above a churn-risk threshold. The "proactive" framing is the cheapest marketing spend imaginable.

OpenVZ nodes make this easier—no kernel logs for you to verify against.
