The peering dispute that made my latency double

Started noticing this around Jan 20. Traceroute from my OVHcloud VPS to anything east of Limburg went from 35ms to 78ms overnight. No packet loss, just... slow.

Turns out KnownHost and RackNerd are in a peering spat. KnownHost wants paid settlement, RackNerd won't budge. So they depeered partially and traffic is dumping onto HostHatch's congested transit in Amsterdam.

Prices only go up. /24 will cost you a kidney. But this latency is killing my BGP play.

Anyone found alternate paths? I've been looking at GreenCloudVPS's anycast but their pricing makes me wince.

/24 for sale. No lowballs.

IMO you should try forcing the path via Hetzner's looking glass and see if they still have direct routes to RackNerd. YMMV depending on your upstream though.

I had something similar last year with a carrier in APAC. Took three weeks to resolve. Take it with a grain of salt, but sometimes announcing a more specific prefix through a friendly peer helps shift traffic.

Bro bro. Very very bad situation gan.

I see this too from my side in jakarta. Traffic going to europe now routing through singapore then tokyo then amsterdam. Very very long path.

Before this dispute it was direct peering at equinix sg. Now cheap cheap transit only.

As far as I know, KnownHost has argued that the traffic ratio exceeded 3:1, which under their policy triggers settlement. Whether this is a pretext or genuine, I cannot say.

From the privacy angle, this rerouting exposes more ASNs to your flow metadata. GDPR-wise, if personal data transits through additional jurisdictions, your Article 44 transfer analysis may need updating. I have raised this with our legal team.
