The $2/year domain that cost $15 to transfer out

We registered a test domain with a promotional registrar last year. The math seemed obvious at the time. Here is the full cost:

  • Registration: $2
  • Whois privacy: $0 (included)
  • Transfer out: $15 (auth code fee)
  • Renewal to unlock: $8 (60-day lock workaround)
  • ICANN fee: $0.18

Total: $25.18

For one year of service. We will not name the provider, but we will share this data. The lesson is that transfer pricing deserves equal attention.
